2008 Program and Leader Guide

Ockanickon's top notch Dan Beard program been a vital stepping stone for thousands of Scouts on their trail to Eagle.  The program has received continuous refinement over the years and offers new Scouts both rank advancement aid and a few merit badges during their first resident camp visit.  This program includes a cookout Thursday evening which still allows Scouts to participate in the variety of program Thursday evening.

9:00-9:30am Introduction
9:30-10:15am Patrol formation, Patrol Leader Elections, Introductory games
10:15am Assemble at gateway for swimming merit badge and instructional swim (bring bathing suit, towel and a change of clothes)
10:30-12:00am Swimming Merit Badge and Instructional Swim
2:00-3:00pm Fire Safety merit badge Day #1
3:00-4:00pm Mammal Study merit badge Day #1
4:00-5:00pm Totin’ Chip part 1 (safety, care and sharpening) (second class 2c)

9:00-9:30am Whipping and Fusing Rope
9:30-10:15am Two Half Hitches and Taut-line Hitch (Tenderfoot 4a & 4b)
10:15am Assemble at gateway for swimming merit badge and instructional swim (bring bathing suit, towel and a change of clothes)
10:30-12:00am Swimming Merit Badge and Instructional Swim
2:00-3:00pm Fire Safety merit badge Day #2

9:00-9:45am Orient a map, read map symbols, read a topographical map (second class 1a)
9:45-10:15am Find direction day and night without the use of a compass (first class 1)
10:15am Assemble at gateway for swimming merit badge and instructional swim (bring bathing suit, towel and a change of clothes)
10:30-12:00am Swimming Merit Badge and Instructional Swim
2:00-3:30pm  First Aid (tenderfoot 12a &12b, second class 6a&6c, first class 8b, 8c&8d)

Second Class 7a, 7b & 7c as well as First Class 9a, 9b & 9c are covered during swimming merit badge
Swimming Merit badge takes place every day, Monday through Friday. Please arrive each morning prepared to swim.
Please bring three completed merit badge cards to Dan Beard on Monday morning for Swimming, Fire Safety and Mammal Study.

The Dan Beard Cookout consists of Scouts making foil pack meals containing beef, mixed vegetables, potatoes and onions served with baked apples and fruit juice.  Scouts with dietary needs should inform the Dan Beard Director so an alternative can be made available. 

Dan Beard Open Program Schedule (By Appointment Only)

While Dan Beard is focused on patrol development and comprehensive work on rank advancement, there are still opportunities to finish particular requirements.

These times are by appointment only.  To have a Scout participate in one or more open sessions, please fill out the Open Program Request Form and place it in Dan Beard’s Mailbox before dinner on Sunday.  The Open Program Request Form will be available at the May 3th, Leaders’ Meeting as well as the Ockanickon website.
