DROP (Delaware River Outdoor Program) is an extension of the Ockanickon Summer Program. Scout
s attending Ockanickon with their troop in 2008
, along with Scouts and Scouters from other units in attendance will form a select crew. This crew will journey down the Delaware River from the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (NPS-DEWA) to Point Pleasant, PA.. Throughout the journey, the crew will hone their canoeing skills, explore the natural history of the Delaware River, develop backcountry camping skills and practice Leave-No-Trace ethics of camping.

The DROP journey is 54 miles long through some of the Delaware’s richest scenery, natural habitats, and cultural developments. Each day of the journey will focus on new skills, from Outdoor Methods to Cultural History. Participants will pack and paddle all supplies for the journey.

DROP is available to any Scout
 or Scout
er attending summer camp at Ockanickon with a registered Unit or as a Provisional Camper. ( This Scout
 or Scout
er must be at least 13 years of age, achieve “swimmer” classification, and have appropriate physical, social, and emotional maturity for a week on the river. All participants must have prior canoeing experience (previous completion of Swimming and Canoeing Merit Badges is preferred)
The DROP program will supply instruction, in canoeing, safety, and emergency procedures. Participants will spend 4 days and 3 nights on the Delaware River and its islands. All camping will be primitive, backcountry style. There will be no improved facilities and all supplies and waste items must be transported downriver with the group.
DROP will provide the following program equipment:
Canoes, PFDs, Paddles
Food, Fuel, Stoves
Bear Bags
Water Purification
Participants will be responsible for:
Tents
Personal Clothing and Toiletries
Sleeping Pad/Sleeping Bag
Personal Mess gear
Advanced Registration IS REQUIRED for DROP. Whether you are attending Ockanickon with your Troop or as a Provisional Camper, you must complete and submit a DROP Registration Packet. Space is limited to the first 20 registrants. Participation will be granted in order of complete registration and payment.
DROP Staff are experienced and trained members of the Ockanickon Staff. The DROP Director has served many years delivering adventure programs to Ockanickon Campers and has completed BSA’s Voyageur and Trek Leader Programs. All staff members are also skilled in aquatic activities, low impact camping and outdoor emergency care. Participation in DROP is under the discretion of the DROP Director and may be limited or terminated for participant safety.

DROP programs and itinerary may be modified based on weather and river conditions.

DROP—Delaware River Outdoor Program is an Ockanickon Adventure along the largest free-flowing river of the Eastern United States.

Troops attending Ockanickon in 2008
 will appreciate this opportunity for older Scout
s and experienced Scouters. Program participants will begin their camp stay at Ockanickon before departing for this excursion.

Four days of paddling, cruising, learning and challenge will carry the group back to Ockanickon with some to enjoy OSR’s other outdoor programs.
